On a steaming hot day in August in the title story of Tornado and Other Seasons, a dancing black funnel rips into the farm of Earl Stiles, and seventeen-year-old Anne Stiles comes to a decision about her future. In the love story, Puzzles, eighty-year-old Nell Webb comes down to breakfast a few weeks after her husband Dan's funeral to find him waiting for her in a shaft of sunlight at the kitchen table, smiling and holding out the newspaper, ready to start the cross word puzzle.
